Q: What is your role at Vanderbilt and why did you choose your field?
A: I have several roles, Assistant Dean of Residential Colleges, Faculty Head of Stambaugh House, and director of the Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center. I’ve been teaching sociology for 18 years and became interested in black history at Vanderbilt, which led to the BCC. The faculty head of house position came from my level of engagement with students and Vanderbilt thought I would be a good fit.

Q: As director of the Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center, what have been the most rewarding parts of your role?
A: Right now one of my most rewarding ones has been developing a cultural congregation, a collective network of faculty, staff, offices, campus partners, alumni, students, and families that play a role in helping our students feel like they belong and have the resources they need to thrive here.

Q: What role does the Black Cultural Center play at Vanderbilt?
A: The BCC is a place for connections, resources, campus partnerships, programming, and even a home away from home and a place for learning about culture.

Q: What does Black History Month mean to you?
A: It means an opportunity to reflect, celebrate, and acknowledge an aspect of our country’s history in a way that has variety and meaning, respecting the past but also thinking intently on the present and future.

Q: What do you think individuals can do to develop a sense of inclusion and belonging among everyone in the VU community?
A: I use the term inclusive curiosity, meaning that we’re inherently inquisitive people. I like to challenge people to connect to others who don’t look like you and you may find out you have a lot more in common with that person than you thought.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to say to our social media audience about Black History Month?
