First-year student Jessie Cobbinah is loving her first few weeks at Vanderbilt, and she’s excited for more. #HumansofVanderbilt #vandygram

Q: Why did you choose Vanderbilt?
A: I chose [Vanderbilt] partially because it’s close to home, and partially because when I toured, it really felt like a school I could see myself at. I like the programs they have, I like the level of community that there is, instead of just going to classes, going to your dorm, and being done for the day. I feel like here, there’s a real, genuine community.

Q: What made you choose your major?
A: Ever since I learned how to hold a pencil, I’ve been writing. I love it, and I love reading as well, so if I could pick one thing to [study], that would be it. I’m also considering education, perhaps, I don’t really know yet. At this point, English is something that I’m sort of set on. I could see myself doing this for the rest of my life.

Q: What are you most excited for this semester?
A: I’m excited to get to know more people and expand my circles, especially with people of different backgrounds. I went to the most diverse high school in Tennessee, where I met a lot of different kinds of people, but it feels like there’s still so much more I can learn about people. Getting to know people [at Vanderbilt] from not just Nashville, but all over the country and the world can expand my viewpoints even more.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about Vanderbilt so far?
A: I really love my floor honestly, especially my corner on Stam 3. We get to know each other, we say hi, we pass each other on campus, get lunch and dinner together. I really like just being able to have a sense of community right outside my door.

Q: How have you changed since high school?
A: I’m definitely saying yes to more things. That was an objective I made coming into college: don’t just say no to things because you’re scared. Open yourself up to opportunities. I feel like when I was in high school I just stayed in my little comfort zone. Even the last two weeks since coming here, I’ve noticed myself saying yes to more things. I’m here, so I might as well.
