Easter Island's mystique is enhanced by the immutable presence of the Moai statues. 

The island features over 900 of these monolithic sculptures, estimated to have been built between 1400 - 1650 A.D. 

To the Rapa Nui people, these totems were actual vessels of sacred spirit.
