In honour of #WorldMaritimeDay we’re taking the opportunity to celebrate our Water Police. ⚓🛥️ 

A lot has changed since Water Police member, Leading Senior Constable Stephen “Bobby” Carter, joined Victoria Police 27 years ago. 

At 28 years old and working as a nurse, Bobby was searching for something different which led him to sign-up to Victoria Police in 1996. 

Graduating in October that same year, he did general duties stints at Preston and Northcote, before spending 6 years at the Sexual Offences and Child-abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT). 

In January 2006 Bobby joined the Water Police after an opportunity arose when the squad was doubling in size. Knowing little about the squad at
 the time, Bobby could never have anticipated how much he’d end up loving it and that he’d still be at the helm 17 years later. 

Since, he has travelled the waterways across Victoria and attended countless jobs, from the Black Saturday bushfires, rescues, licence checks,
 and floods. 

Bobby's favourite part of the job? 

“The variety - every job is different. You just don’t know where you’re going to end up.” 

Highly respected by his colleagues, Bobby's using his extensive boating experience and skills to help train the next generation of the Water Police
Squad. But don’t worry, he’s not going anywhere and will continue to keep us safe on the water for a little while yet.
