Saint Anselm students had the unique chance to discuss climate change at a historic event with four sitting governors in attendance, evenly representing both political parties. ⁣

On September 12, the college and the New Hampshire Institute of Politics hosted an interactive climate change debate moderated by Braver Angels. The debate was sponsored by the National Governors Association as part of the organization’s “Disagree Better” initiative, which is led by the Chair of the National Governors Association, Governor Spencer Cox of Utah (R). At the debate, Gov. Cox was joined by Gov. Chris Sununu of New Hampshire (R), Gov. Daniel McKee of Rhode Island (D), and Gov. Phil Murphy of New Jersey (D).  ⁣

Members of the Saint Anselm College debate team, along with students and community members, voiced their opinions throughout the debate, giving arguments about whether governmental or individual action is more important in addressing climate change. Debate team members — Nathanial Crane ‘24, Sean Kelleher ‘24, Alexander Burgess ‘24, Bella Uva ‘26, Kellan Barbee ‘26, and Michael Hanna ’26 — kicked off the event with prepared statements that showcased both affirmative and negative opinions of the topic “Climate Change: Individual Responsibility or Government Action?”⁣

The mission of the Braver Angels debates, as well as the “Disagree Better” program, was cemented by Gov. Cox at the end of the debate, “I don’t believe that we can solve climate change or anything else if we hate each other as Americans. More than anything else, I’m much more interested in you all being able to communicate with each other.”⁣
