A second chance at life allowed Sado Isak to earn her degree in public health and give back to her community in a big way.

⏪ In March 2020, Sado experienced life-threatening complications from COVID-19. After struggling for four weeks from what she thought was just a bad cold, her body gave out. EMTs rushed to her home, provided lifesaving CPR and took her to the hospital where she later recovered.

“It was very scary — I’ve never experienced anything like that," Sado said. "But I saw this as a great sign that I was destined to do something better.”

⏩ Fast forward to January 2023, Sado decided to do an internship with RedCrossWNY. She became involved with supporting youth leadership programs and providing Hands-Only CPR training. Today, she has completed her college education and is continuing to support her community as a mental health counselor.

While Sado's involvement with the Red Cross helped her pay it forward after receiving lifesaving care, her interest in humanitarian efforts was sparked as a child. Proud of her Somali heritage, Sado says the tireless work of the Red Cross reminds her of the support she received while in a refugee camp in Uganda. "I joined the Red Cross because their mission and goals aligned closely with mine," she said.

Sado is honored to share her story in hopes that it will inspire others to learn lifesaving skills. We are grateful for her willingness and passion to educate others! ❤️
