Despite being lifelong conference foes, the two teams met on the gridiron only 14 times over 62 years. They have faced each other annually since 1990.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The Tigers and Rebels would face off in two bowl games as conference foes - the 1965 Liberty Bowl and the 1971 Gator Bowl.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The Gator Bowl pitted future Heisman Trophy winner Pat Sullivan against all-time great Archie Manning. While the two legendary quarterbacks faced off in Jacksonville, Florida, their legendary coaches were not in attendance.⁣⁣

Auburn's Shug Jordan was recovering from an emergency appendectomy back home. Ole Miss' John Vaught suffered a heart attack just a few months prior. He would step away for a while before returning for one final season in 1973.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
In 1973, Auburn would officially rename their home venue Jordan-Hare Stadium, becoming the first venue in the country to be named after an active coach. Auburn would pull out the 14-7 victory despite gaining only 123 yards.⁣⁣

The 1985 meeting saw Auburn dominate. The #14 Tigers totaled 609 yards, with 240 coming on the back of Bo Jackson. Ole Miss ran just 30 plays, gained 9 yards, had two first downs, and punted 10 times - Auburn punted not once. The Tigers would win 41-0.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Ole Miss traditionally wore powder blue helmets until then-head coach Tommy Tuberville made the switch to navy shells in 1995. The 2021 matchup marked the first time that the Rebels have worn the resurrected alternate helmets against Auburn. The Tigers countered with the return of the orange facemasks, creating one of the best uniform matchups in recent history.⁣
