miamidadeparks Natural Areas Management (NAM) Division in partnership with miamidaderer (EEL) Program and the flforestservice are conducting a controlled burn in the Deering main preserve Pineland.

The small, deliberately set and closely monitored fires are designed to burn leaves, pine needles, cones, small branches and other flammable materials on the forest floor to prevent them from becoming fuel in a larger blaze. 

Fire is a regularly occurring, important and natural part of the Pinelands ecology. The heat from forest fires causes some trees to drop their seeds into the soil, generating new trees, and the flames clear out old, dead ones. Animals are safe during the burn and utilize gopher tortoise burrows to avoid the fire.

Deering Estate is host to more than 100 acres of this critical habitat. Pinelands at the Deering Estate are host to federal and state listed imperiled species including deltoid spurge, Small’s milkwort, and Garber’s spurge.
