For a long time I felt like an imposter. I would look around and see people who I thought were better than me.
People whose parents were famous. People who came from powerful and influential families. People with more education and more money. There was a time here at CNN when I just didn’t feel like I belonged. For years, I told myself this and believed this lie. I don’t anymore.
I mentor a lot of young people, most of them people of color. “Minorities” as some would call them. I hate that word. Because we should never feel minor about anything in our life. I tell them that the sooner they realize that they belong wherever their feet are planted, the less they will struggle with that feeling I did. We are not imposters. We belong. For some reason, walking through our mostly empty newsroom just now as we prepare to move buildings, I was flooded with a burst of gratitude that I am here. Feet firmly planted. Today, I know I belong.
