Rodney Anderson still remembers the brief conversation he had with his daughter seven years ago that sparked an idea and changed the course of his life and his community.

The two were in the car, with Anderson driving around Waterloo on a cool October day. Peering out the passenger window, Anderson said his daughter spotted several people walking and asked him if he knew where they were headed.

Without hesitation, Anderson told her they were going to the Salvation Army on Franklin Street or to the nearest gas station for food. Then, passing by Franklin Street, Anderson said his daughter pointed to a bare lot where an old church once sat and said: "That would be a nice spot for a grocery store."

Anderson said he was struck by his daughter's observations. In just moments, she noticed the city's northeast side, particularly the Walnut Neighborhood, was a food desert and proposed a solution — one that Anderson admits he took to heart and made his mission.
