I spent nearly a decade in college football weight rooms, first as a player and later as a coach. Allow me to share three of the most legendary NFL weight room tales I’ve come across.

1 — Walter Payton’s Deadlift:

There’s a well-known tale about the greatest running back ever: anyone who attempted to match him in hill sprints at his Mississippi home would inevitably end up puking.

While that’s impressive, it pales in comparison to lifting 625 pounds in a deadlift when you only weigh 208 pounds.

Clyde Emrich, the Chicago Bears strength coach, vouches that Payton achieved this feat during his prime.

2 — Terry Long’s Squat:

Seeking to grab the attention of NFL teams in 1983 after his time at East Carolina, Terry participated in his sole powerlifting meet.

And his stats were astonishing: an 837-pound squat, a 501-pound bench press, and an almost world-record-breaking 865-pound deadlift.

3 — The Ultimate Legend: Larry Allen’s Bench Press:

Larry Allen wasn’t just an exceptional offensive lineman for the Cowboys with a room full of trophies; he also had a bench press record of 705 pounds.

Rumor has it that in 1998, he was close to setting the world record at 715 pounds.

Imagine being a Super Bowl Champion and a potential world record bench press holder simultaneously.
