Cameron Crazies. UNC vs Duke. Gold Medal - World Sports Photography Awards 2023

It has been over 15 years since I entered a photo contest. It is just something that I never felt I needed to validate what I do and the level that I work in day in and day out. Despite my personal feelings of self doubt, imposter syndrome and the like I also am acutely aware of what I am capable of creating and the abilities that I have with a camera in my hands. So when I saw a call for entires for the worldsportsphotographyawards I decided on a whim…and on the day of the deadline…to put a handful of images together and submit. Like they say, you can’t win if you don’t play.

That being said, it was humbling to receive notification that I had taken gold in the basketball category of this year’s competition for this photograph taken while on assignment for dukembb in covering not only their rivalry game against UNC but also in what was Coach K’s final game in Cameron. The atmosphere and the rivalry for this game is unmatched in the world of basketball and I hope that I made a photograph that does this rivalry and atmosphere justice.

Thanks also to nikonusa for their support and how they push me to create at the highest level possible every time I pick up a camera which in this case was a Z 9 lensed with the Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8 S lens. Thanks also to sandiskprofessional for making the most reliable and the fastest media to keep me flying from capture to archive while keeping everything secure and quickly accessible.
