In 2021, Breanna joined Victoria Police as a Police Custody Officer (PCO). At the time, she was looking to break from her 9-5 job and the role's shift work arrangements caught her interest.

"Every shift can be different. You could have a day working in the equipment issue office, a court shift, or in the attendance office," Breanna says.

What she didn't anticipate was the personal development that she's drawn from the role.
“I have learnt a lot more than I thought as a PCO and grown as a person for the better to further my career. I have worked closely with a great team of officers and supervisors who have helped me become not only more knowledgeable and skilled, but also a lot more confident within myself and my capabilities.”

Her advice to those thinking about applying to be a Police Custody Officer?

“Do your research on the role, and work on your communication skills. You learn a lot at the Academy, but even more out in the actual job. Your communication skills will help you work with a wide range of people, mostly at their worst – it will be your best tool on the job”.
