A black guitar case, unique thrifted patches on a messenger bag, and cool looking headphones belong to Kate Yarleque ’26. The fashion merchandising major was listening to Fiona Apple on her walk to her philosophy class, who she said was one of her favorite artists. Her personal recommendations for new Fiona Apple listeners are “Paper Bag” or “I Want You to Love Me”, and when asked about her other favorite artists, she said, “I’d say Fiona’s one of my favorite female artists…her, Mitski, and Lana Del Ray are like my top favorites,” with a smile on her face. When asked about the guitar on her back, Kate said, “Oh yeah, I play guitar! I’m going to my philosophy class then I have to go all the way to my guitar class. Usually I play like any indie rock songs, cause that’s usually what I listen to. So any songs that I listen to, I wanna play on guitar!” In her free time, when she’s not playing guitar, Kate said she enjoys thrifting in her hometown, and told us how most of the unique patches on her bag were thrifted, a popular pastime that is shared by a lot of students on campus. After a little tour of her patches, Kate stated that she is really enjoying her time in the fashion merch program here at Marist, and said that she loves it, “minus the homework,” which is a sentiment shared by most freshmen in their first year here.
