Walk on the Wild Side. Who knew the play-in match for the playoffs would turn out this fun. Both teams had squeaked into the postseason quite heroically — Charlotte upset Messi and Co last weekend while the Red Bulls had JMi to thank for his last-minute penalty against Nashville to extend their season. Nothing could’ve prepared us for the goal fest at RBA, though. It was flashbacks to 2018 as the Bulls tore through CLTFC like those good ol’ days with Bradley Wright-Phillips, Tyler Adams, Etienne, Kaku, and the whole gang. But as much as everyone likes to be nostalgic, there’s something to say about today’s squad and their ability to turn it on when the chips are down. 5-2 when it was all said and done. Elias Manoel bagged a cool hat trick, and JMi dropped a gorgeous free kick with his blessed left foot. Made it look simple. In the end, the MLS playoffs are always about capturing lightning in a bottle, and that performance last night should give RBNY fans hope for a good run this November. After all, it was the first time a RBNY player has ever scored a hat trick in the playoffs, it was the first five-goal playoff match ever for the club, and it was their first playoff win in five years. The crowd left the stadium grinning ear to ear, and the postgame chatter was all about “Can we pull off the upset against Cincy?” Considering The Orange and Blue tore their hearts out last year in the playoffs, it’d really make a hell of a story to down the no.1 seed. Crazier things have happened, though.
