On the day Doug Dewaele reached the milestone of 96 gallons of blood donated, his family was there to surprise him with a quilt made from his collection of Red Cross blood donor T-shirts. 🥹

Doug started giving blood when he was in high school. Honoring the lives of his father and brother — who both passed away from cancer — is what motivates him to regularly make the 90-minute round trip to donate blood.

His granddaughter, Sydney, carefully cut out the T-shirts and put together the design of the quilt. She presented it to him in celebration of his incredible donation milestone alongside their family and NE_IA_RedCross staff.

“It’s his routine now,” Sydney said. “He doesn’t miss a chance to give blood.”

Doug is humble about his milestone — he believes blood donation is the right thing to do. “If you can help somebody out in their time of need, well then, that’s what we should do.” ❤️
