On #NationalAuthorsDay, we celebrate authors who have been creating and telling stories to fill our heads for thousands of years.

This year, Deering Estate celebrates the holiday season through the looking glass with the holiday décor inspired by the fantastical world of renowned Victorian author, Lewis Carroll.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass (1871) were part of a literary genre which aimed to capture a child’s imagination, often through the use of illustrations. The result is a timeless tale, recognized across the world for its artistry and wordplay.

Carroll’s text itself provides few visual cues about the world of Wonderland. For Alice, Carroll tells us only that her hair is straight; she has a pocket from which she removes the comfits and thimble after the caucus race; and she is wearing a skirt. This lack of visual description has left great scope for countless illustrators to re-imagine Wonderland.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass have been translated into about 170 languages and interpreted by artists from around the world. They sought to capture the curiosity and wonder of childhood, the nonsense of the adult world, and the special experience of reading Alice.

Don't miss the topsy-turvy world of Wonderland at Deering Estate! Led by Deering Estate Designer-in-Residence, Alfredo Brito, each room of the Stone House and Richmond Cottage will feature whimsical holiday decorations by premiere local interior designers that will bring to life Carroll’s beloved characters.

Alice, White Rabbit, Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts will be featured in several of the historic rooms and galleries and hand-decorated holiday trees. Highlights of this year’s décor will include an imagined recreation of Carroll’s literary studio, a table set for Mad Tea Party, and many other surprises! On display daily, Nov. 24 - Jan. 7.
