This is the exact moment it happened. With about 50 seconds left in the second Finals match of the Word Team Trials, I was injured. And almost nobody knew about it.

I was less than a minute away from qualifying for my tenth world team and rejoining Team USA for an opportunity to compete on the world stage again after failing to qualify for this year’s Olympics.

Then this.

I defended a hard shot from my opponent and landed awkwardly, with my leg hyperextended. There was so much pressure on my muscles that my calf snapped. It literally snapped. I felt the sharp pain of a pop behind my right knee and knew immediately it wasn’t good.

After getting my hand raised, I quickly limped off the mat and hopped out of the arena. I attempted to hide from the unsuspecting crowd what I already knew — that something was seriously wrong.

Here I was on the brink of an epic return, and now I was hobbled. Instead of celebrating that night with my teammates, I crutched from the venue with my head low, unable to walk on my own. retreated back to my hotel room undetected.

I didn’t think I’d be able to wrestle at Worlds.

The doctors said I needed eight weeks to recover. I had three.

“There’s no way I can beat the best guys in the world with one leg.”

That was 25 days ago. On Monday, I won my 5th World Championship, and my 6th title overall.

Thankfully, my faith won the wrestling match over my doubt. I prayed for healing, and God said yes. He answers our prayers, according to His will.

That’s why this gold was so special. It was nothing short of a miracle. Despite the overwhelming odds I was facing, God allowed me to recover fast enough so I could perform at my best.

After what I’ve encountered over the last few weeks, I’m not taking any of the credit for this victory.

Many people rallied behind me and never let me doubt myself or God’s ability to heal supernaturally. They encouraged me to do my therapy, work as hard as I could, and stay locked in. Then, trust God. I was in fact built for moments like this, and thankfully, they were right.

For that I say thank you. This title is for all of you.
