When I was a little boy, on Friday afternoons my Dad would come and scoop me up from school to take me with him to the barbershop back in South Jersey. I still remember him making me greet whoever was cutting my hair that day. I would throw in a quick “What’s up?” as I climbed into the barber chair, planting myself onto the kids stool that the barber had placed on the large seat.

Periodically, the stylist would spin me around in the chair to get a better cutting angle, and I would lock eyes with my dad. He’d always shoot me a wink, and I’d respond with a smile.

For years, my pop would choose my haircut for me. Partly because I didn’t know much about haircuts, and partly because I was too shy to tell the barber what I wanted. So every Friday it was the same cut. Low on top, Bald fade, with a little part on the side.

Once I got a bit older, I started to care more about my appearance, and I remember finally feeling ready to choose my own style. It took me a few times to build up the courage to actually ask my dad, but I think he could sense it. I’d outgrown that cut, and I wanted to be more like him, and he didn’t do fades. He said yes, of course, and it was a big moment for me.

It may seem trivial, but at the time I remember the enormous sense of pride and ownership I felt when my Dad finally let me tell the barber, “I’ll take a Caesar, low all around with a shape-up.

Earlier this year my family came to visit me in Nebraska. My dad and I both needed haircuts. So just like we had many years ago, we hopped in the car together and headed to the barbershop. But nowadays is different. Not only have he and I exchanged spots behind the wheel, but there’s also a special guest tagging along — my 5-year-old son, Beacon.

Just before Beacon hopped in the chair, I pulled out my phone and we looked through different pictures of cuts on the internet. I let him pick his favorite, and then told him how to explain it to the barber, just like I did when I was a little boy with my Dad all those years ago. He chose a fade. Go figure.

One of my the best experiences in life is when it comes full circle. -JB 📸 @leviventura.photo
