Iⁿ‘zhúje‘waxóbe, a sacred rock to the Kaw Nation of Oklahoma, is being returned to his people and given a new home in Allegawaho Park, Kansas. Iⁿ‘zhúje‘waxóbe’s new home will be made as accessible as possible, with the help of C. Huffman, Kaw Nation citizen, poet, and theologian, who also lives at the intersection of Indigeneity and Disability. 

“When you are thinking of creating something for your community, it’s important to consider the needs of everyone, from the youngest member of your community to the eldest member of your community. This can be a tall order, it can be overwhelming, but there are simple ways to ensure that people are included,” Huffman said. “For our community, having our elders involved is essential. We value them, we learn from them. And the same can be said of every member of our community.” 

Iⁿ‘zhúje‘waxóbe lived in Robinson Park in Lawrence, Kansas, where he had been placed after being forcibly taken from the Kaw Nation in 1929. In 2020, the Kaw Nation made a formal appeal to the Lawrence City Council to have the Rock returned to them, a decision which was unanimously agreed upon by the City Council. The City of Lawrence also issued a formal apology for taking the Rock.
