Did you know you shouldn't eat gar eggs??? Adult gar have stout scales that serve as body armor to protect them from many potential predators, but their eggs and larvae aren’t so formidable on the outside. Instead, the eggs and larvae rely on a different survival tactic – toxicity. 

The eggs are toxic to potential predators like mammals (including humans), birds and crayfish. Larval gar even maintain the toxicity after hatching. Actually consuming one of these toxic youngsters would cause severe gastrointestinal distress 🤯 #GarWeek
