Affectionately known as Dr. G, our Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs began her career path as a first-generation student. With 25+ years of experience in higher education, she’s made it her mission to enhance the student experience, giving special attention to promoting diversity and inclusion in all aspects of campus life.

She immigrated to the United States from the Philippines at 10 and grew up in a tight-knit, multicultural community in California. Her parents’ hard work in the service industry (her mom recently retired after working as a waitress for 50 years) deeply ingrained in her the principles of diligence, work ethic, and giving back to the community. Her family also instilled in her the value of education, and she’s always aspired to pursue a college education.

With a strong desire to attend college but limited knowledge of the process, she received guidance from her high school college counselor, Mr. Woods, who helped her secure a scholarship and a transformative college tour experience that opened doors to a world of possibilities. Thanks to his unwavering support, her family, and her own determination, this led her to be the first person in her family to attend college in the United States.

At Loyola Marymount University, she majored in business and pursued studies in Asian Pacific Studies and history. She often jokes that she “minored in student affairs” because of her extensive involvement, including participation in various extracurricular activities such as student government, service organizations, and serving as the director of the Special Olympics program. She went on to earn her master’s and doctoral degrees, both in education, from Claremont Graduate University.

With her journey from the Philippines to the U.S. and her commitment to making education accessible to all, she shines as a beacon of inspiration.
