Meet Dumbo Octopuses, a diverse family boasting at least 15 distinct species. These incredible cephalopods, resemble umbrellas with their arms and can outspread, venture into the deep open ocean, reaching astonishing depths of at least 13,100 feet (4000 m) – earning them the title of the deepest-living octopuses. Navigating through the challenges of frigid, light-deprived environments, Dumbo octopuses showcase specialized behaviors for successful reproduction, with females carrying eggs at different stages and the ability to store sperm for extended periods.

Life for Dumbo octopuses unfolds in a slow dance, propelled and steered by their distinctive, flapping ear-like fins. As foraging predators, they target pelagic invertebrates above the sea floor. Remarkably, these deep-sea wonders face minimal natural predators, with their main threats coming from diving fishes and marine mammals like tunas, sharks, and dolphins. Despite their rarity and penchant for extreme depths, Dumbo octopuses remain largely unaffected by human activities, seldom falling prey to fishing nets.

While the largest recorded Dumbo octopus reached an impressive 5 feet 10 inches (1.8 m) in length and weighed 13 pounds (5.9 kg), most species average between 7.9 to 12 inches (20-30 cm)
