Here’s the truth 👇

We’ve been lucky enough to visit Grand Canyon in every season — and in our opinion, there’s NO bad time to visit! The epic viewpoints will take your breath away ALL YEAR ✌️.

Winter in GC is one of our favorites, mainly because, we’ve had the hiking trails all to ourselves — literally, we saw 5 people spanning 10+ miles!

⛔️ Want to visit Grand Canyon in winter? Here’s what you’ll want to know ⬇️

▫️VISIBILITY 👀 : if you’re not up for hiking into the canyon, honestly, it may not be worth the trip. Viewpoints from the top of the rim were non existent when went late Dec/January last year— UNTIL we hiked below the cloud line — then BAM, we had the views, and Kaibab trail all to ourselves 🤩.

▫️HIKING CONSIDERATIONS: hiking the Grand Canyon in winter requires extra caution. Trails can be icy or snowy. Bring micro-spikes so you don’t slip! 

SHUTTLE OPERATIONS: Even in winter, we found that the trustee (South Rim) Grand Canyon shuttles operate. Park at the Visitors Center, and get what feels like a private escort to the trailheads. SO different than summer, when you’re packed in like a sardine can!

Be sure to consider:

💦 Stay hydrated: Just because it’s cold weather, you may need as much if not more water on the trail. 

👚Pack Layers: dressing in layers is crucial during winter visits. The temperature difference between the Canyon rim and the canyon floor is significant. Bring warm clothing for our the top including waterproof layers. You’ll drop up to 5,000ft elevation, and near the bottom we were down to t-shirts! 

☀️ Short Daylight Hours: remember that winter days are short. Check sunset time, and give yourself plenty of time to turn back — IT TAKES a LOT MORE TIME to HIKE UP THEN DOWN 👍. Always smart to pack a headlamp and trusty lighting! 

📸Bring your camera in winter! The snow capped landscape in winter is outstanding.
