Five employees at the Philz Coffee on Gilman Street were sent home Thursday for wearing pins that read “free Palestine” — despite saying they did not receive any written notice about the rules regarding pins on work uniforms.
Christine Belardo, a shift lead who was among the employees sent home, said she and other baristas started wearing the pins the week of the Oct. 7 attack on Israel by Hamas. Although the store manager had told workers to remove the pins throughout the past few weeks, it was not until this week that employees were told they would be sent home otherwise.
