Photos by Danielle Villasana davillasana | Fueled by demands for equality and improved public services, Chile’s 2019 nationwide protests, shown in these images, prompted a vote to rewrite the country’s constitution in which nearly 80 percent of citizens cast a ballot. In stark contrast to Chile’s current constitution, dating back to Augusto Pinochet’s military dictatorship, the proposed constitution focuses especially on protecting and increasing the human rights of groups historically marginalized and excluded, fighting climate change, and achieving gender parity. Chileans will vote on September 4 either in favor of or against this new constitution, drafted through a democratic process for the first time in the country's history.
