Photos by jasperdoest | A forest elephant reaches for the fruit of a Detarium macrocarpum tree in Gabon’s Lopé National Park. The most nutritious part of the elephant’s diet is fruit, and I was amazed by the variety to be found in the country’s tropical forests, which are considered to be the last stronghold for these animals. For trees such as this one, forest elephants are crucially important. They help the trees spread by digesting their fruit, which makes the seeds germinate faster. The next image features a selection of fruits and seeds found in Lopé National Park. Follow me jasperdoest for more on the relationship between humankind and nature. #gabon #forest #elephant #fruit
