When I arrived at this store on Indonesia's Tanjung Batu island, a boy was sitting alone outside. He seemed so content. Behind him, in this shop selling drinks and simple, precooked food, hallucinatory colors were everywhere. The woman who owned the little store, called a warung, had painted every wall in bright hues, like the cheeriest of crayons. She lit the house's exterior in blue and had the orangest chairs. Moments later, a motorcycle pulled up with super-orange wheels. That evening, I felt so much peace in these irresistible colors. I didn't want to leave.
