Photographer paulnicklen captured this polar bear's technique for using as little energy as possible to travel down a snowy slope in Svalbard, Norway. Survival for these bears is a simple equation: gain as much fat as possible during winter through spring and burn only what is necessary while stranded on land in the summer and fall. This big male certainly had the formula dialed, but even energy-saving tricks like this do little to stave off the impacts of shorter feeding seasons thanks to steadily warming temperatures.
