Female orangutans often are killed when confronted in oil palm plantations or logged areas, and their babies may be kept as illegal pets. Many of these babies die of starvation. But if rescued by NGOs specializing in rehabilitating orangutans to return them to the wild, they have a fighting chance. Many are deeply traumatized by having seen their mothers killed, and some can never be let back into the wild.
