Photo by iantehphotography / Notting Hill Carnival—there's nothing quite like it. You exit the tube station or get off a bus on the street before being carried away by a sea of excited faces bobbing along to the irresistible hum of the celebrations. Sounds of calypso emanate from hundreds of steel pans, just as a procession of dancers dressed in colorful feather boas with band floats in tow pass by. It’s the biggest street party in Europe centered on the music and culture of the Caribbean diaspora. Its origins were steeped in ideas of anti-racist resistance; it was started in 1959 by the Trinidadian activist, writer, and editor Claudia Jones.
