Sounds of calypso emanate from hundreds of steel pans, just as a procession of dancers dressed in colorful feather boas with band floats in tow pass by. It’s the biggest street party in Europe centered on the music and culture of the Caribbean diaspora. Its origins were steeped in ideas of anti-racist resistance; it was started in 1959 by the Trinidadian activist, writer, and editor Claudia Jones.
