How are your bones? It's something I've been thinking about for a while. Have I built up enough bone density in my twenties to last me til I die? Am I doing enough now to keep my bones strong? Optimising your bone health is an important part of ageing well and for both sexes, hormones play a key role in this. One of the reasons I chose to go on HRT is because of bone health and its beneficial effects on helping to ward off osteoporosis.⠀ ⠀ Oestrogen and testosterone are both important and deficiency of either can compromise our bone health. After the menopause, bone loss is accelerated as the oestrogen levels decline quite rapidly. For men, their hormone levels decline more gradually so while this still contributes to bone loss, it's not so dramatic. ⠀ ⠀ Smoking, alcohol consumption, existing medical conditions - these can all have an effect on bone health along with age and sex.
