I want to share with you something that genuinely makes my heart happy. It's something that really motivates me to teach. I have a soft spot for struggling students whether academic, social, or behavioral (which in my belief stems from an unmet need). When I come across one, I am 100% invested in helping them. Recently, I had a student truly inspire me. This child was withdrawn- disconnected from the group and disconnected academically. I went out of my way to engage with the child. They were reluctant for quite a while, but I persisted. I looked for things they were interested in to hold their attention and worked with them 1:1 when I could. Then, over the course of a week or so, the child blossomed. They began interacting with other children, becoming more interested in materials on the shelf, and reading books in the library (something I had no idea they could do and a completely new behavior according to the parents).
