#AroundTheWorldIn8Days Designed by Thomas Jefferson theuniversityofvirginia's Rotunda was inspired by the Roman Pantheon and served as the center of the college's Academical Village. The structure was controversial at the time of construction because Jefferson was rejecting the norm of placing a church at the center of the university and instead making a place of learning (it served as the schools original library) modeled after after a pagan temple the focal point of the school. It is currently one of only three man-made unesco world heritage sites in the U.S.
