As part of our ongoing
#WW1 commemorations, The Royal Archives have put together documents and photographs relating to the visits which King George V and Queen Mary made to the Western Front to meet troops and find out more about their experiences first-hand.
The photographs and documents seen here include: - A photograph of King George King George V at the top of Scherpenberg Hill on 3 December 1914. His Majesty visited the Headquarters of the 3rd Division of the British Army there. He said of his view from the hill, ‘It was a remarkably clear afternoon. We were only about three miles from the enemy's trenches. Ypres, Gheluvelt, Wytschaete, Messines & Mont Kemmel being easily seen with glasses…. While on the hill I received a message by telephone from Major Baird & Officers of the Gordon Highlanders in the trenches…I have now seen all the troops out here in the last three days except those actually in the trenches.’ - A telegram sent to troops in advance of the visit by Major Clive...
