The USC Center on Public Diplomacy held a conversation with Taiwan’s former president, Ma Ying-jeou, on campus last week to discuss cross-strait relations between mainland China 🇨🇳 and Taiwan 🇹🇼 -- a topic that has been back in the news because of President Donald Trump’s just-completed trip to the region. Trump reaffirmed the U.S.’s stance on the “one China” policy, which is the diplomatic acknowledgment that there is only one Chinese government. That means countries seeking relations with China must end any official relations with Taiwan. In Ma’s discussion with Annenberg Dean Willow Bay, he said that he tried to use his presidency from 2008 to 2016 to improve cross-strait relations, despite the “one China” policy. His strategy was simple: “Build peaceful relations with mainland China, Japan, and the U.S.” Ma also discussed the role of commerce, trade and tourism in Taiwan, especially by Chinese visitors. —
