Back when the Marina Bay area was an open sea, Chandra Mohan Rethnam was a young boy, who watched ships berth as he waited at Clifford Pier. Returning from their travels to India, Rethnam's grandparents would be on one of the bumboats ferrying passengers from the ship to our shores. This was a family ritual at the time, and has become a fond memory etched deeply in Rethnam's mind. To remember this and his grandparents who are no longer with him, Rethnam adopted two trees at Esplanade (as part of our Adopt a Tree, Mark a Bench initiative), near the water of Marina Bay, facing the pier.
