When you think of the jail, you might not think of
#sustainability. But,
#dyk, the Todd Road Jail has several sustainability programs in place?
In an effort to save electricity and utilize renewable energy sources, on-site on the property of the TRJ, there are solar panels that provide approximately 40% of the jail’s annual electricity needs.
Food production and food waste are also considered at the jail. The property at the Todd Road Jail has over two acres of mandarin and lemon orchards which not only supply fruit to be used in both the kitchens at the Main Jail and the Todd Road Jail, but all excess fruit is delivered and donated to Food Share of Ventura County. As well, to address food waste, the jail has a composting program that collects food scraps from inmates’ meals to compost and eventually be mixed into soil.
Happy Earth Day everyone! 🌎
