We're back with another episode of
#FunFactFriday!
Winter is often peak season for
#citrus fruits. Did you know that there is a grove of mandarin and lemon trees at the Todd Road Jail? The "Heritage Orchard", which is a little over 2 acres in size, was planted in 2016 to replace existing turf to aid in water conservation.
All orchard maintenance and harvesting is done by Todd Road Jail staff and inmate labor as part of a vocational program. The fruit that is harvested from the trees is used in the kitchens for both the Toad Road Jail and the Main Jail (Pre-Trial Detention Facility). As well, the fruit is often used by the culinary class at the Todd Road Jail, an on-going vocational and rehabilitation program for inmates.
The almost 450 trees in the orchard create a lot of produce, so all excess fruit is delivered and donated to foodsharevc. To date, VCSO has donated 3,785 lbs. of mandarins and 10,157 lbs. of lemons. Now that's
#sustainability!
