#manapua from a store down the road. Originally called a char siu bao in Chinese, this savory delicacy is a bread dumpling stuffed with sweet, red pork. When the Pake (Chinese) introduced the char siu bao to Hawaiʻi, the Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) called it meaʻono puaʻa. Meaʻono means "something delicious or sweet" and puaʻa means "pork." As Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawai‘i (Hawaiian Language Month) comes to a close at the end of this month, ka_ito shows us why accuracy in the Hawaiian Language is important, and how it can impact what we call something—like the finless, traditional Hawaiian surfboard: Alai‘a.
