Today is World Sickle Cell Day and to spread awareness we are celebrating Dream Kid Zasheed's story and dream! Zasheed was born with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and has been living with it his whole life. In 2013, Zasheed had his dream come true of going to the Yankees Stadium with his brother Zebulon, who lives with Cerebral Palsy. Zasheed must receive blood transfusions every three weeks in order to stay healthy. Hemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body, however, people with sickle cell have abnormal hemoglobin. The sickle-shaped cells are not flexible and can stick to vessel walls, which causes blockage and stops the flow of blood.
