Winner 🏆
In the summer of 2022, engineers at NASAGlenn’s Simulated Lunar Operations Lab mapped out rocks to test a model of NASA’s Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER). VIPER’s 100-day mission will see the mobile rover navigate the precarious terrain of the Moon to search for ice and other resources, a vital step toward establishing a long-term presence on the lunar surface.
This photo was a third place winner in NASA's fifth annual "Photographer of the Year" awards.
Image description: An engineer wears a protective mask, shoes, pants, and a blue shirt as they place rocks in a lab covered in tan sand. The sand has imprints crisscrossing its surface and light gray rocks around the person. In the upper right of the photo, a model of VIPER sits almost entirely out of frame, with only a yellow body and gray tracks visible.
