NASA’s Orion spacecraft splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on Dec. 11, 2022, after traveling more than 1.4 million miles (2.3 million km) on a path around the Moon, completing the
#Artemis I flight test. During the mission, Orion performed two lunar flybys, coming within 80 miles of the lunar surface. At its farthest distance during the mission, Orion traveled nearly 270,000 miles (430,000 km) from our home planet.
NASA led the interagency landing and recovery team on the USS Portland, consisting of personnel and assets from the DeptOfDefense, USNavy amphibious specialists, SpaceForceDOD weather specialists, and USAirForce specialists, as well as engineers and technicians from NASAKennedy, NASAJohnson, and LockheedMartin Space Operations.
