Early sport specialization? Not here! We want our athletes to be able to master basic motor patterns and they should begin to incorporate appropriate resistance training as a part of their long-term athletic development pathway. .
Many coaches and parents make the short sighted mistake of early sport specialization for their younger athletes without a basic athletic development foundation. Many falsely believe the myth that resistance training for youth is bad and will “stunt growth.” Neither is correct. .
In our Scholastic Prep class for middle schoolers (6-8th grades), the athletes perform a fun and engaging active-dynamic warmup, some form of varied and non-specific athletic skill (like crawling, tumbling, kicking, catching or throwing), develop COD and speed, and finish with age appropriate resistance training using a system that balances load and mastery of the basic movement patterns (squat, lunge, hinge, press, pull, brace). . .
