Althea Gibson broke the color barrier in tennis.
In 1950, Althea Gibson became the first Black player to receive an invitation to the US National Championships (today’s US Open), and in 1956, she became the first Black player to win a Grand Slam tournament, the French Championships (today’s French Open). Gibson would go on to win 11 Grand Slam titles - 5 Singles, 5 Doubles, and 1 Mixed Double.
One of the greatest players of all time, Gibson was inducted into the tennishallofame in 1971.
