TODAY IN SPORTS HISTORY: New York Rangers (nyrangers) Wayne Gretzky played the final game of his famous NHL career against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Madison Square Garden on April 18, 1999. Gretzky, also known as The Great One, did not score a goal, but he did earn an assist, the 2,857th point of his amazing career. An emotional ceremony after the game brought out many NHL legends along with the Gretzky family. Before the game the NHL announced they would be retiring the number 99 in his honor. Many of his records still stand today. Frank Becerra Jr. (frankbjrphoto) has been a photojournalist for over 40 years and is digging into his archives to produce a photo gallery every day from an event that happened on that day that he covered years ago.
