Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) is one of the most iconic abstract artists of the 20th century. He created sculptural work known for its fusion of traditional Japanese art and abstraction often with uses in everyday life as he sought a balance between the practical qualities and aesthetic ones. Noguchi became known for his unusual furniture pieces and architecture made from a variety materials and textures. In Paris in 1958, he transformed a simple garden into the UNESCO Garden, using a Japanese-inspired layout that combined granite, concrete, and wood, forming a unique geometric configuration. His “Noguchi table,” an inspiration for many modern tabletops in the 21st century, joined a serpentine two-piece wooden platform with a large glass plate that functioned as the table top.
