There are just under 30,000 rhinos left on earth, down from several hundred thousand before the 1800s. They are spread across two continents - Asia and Africa - and consist of five species: the white rhino; the black; the greater one-horned; the Sumatran; and the Javan. In the last decade, rhino poaching has reached dire proportion, despite the 1977 ban on international trade in rhino horn; traffickers have exploited loopholes permitting the export of trophies from licensed sport hunting, as well as several countries’ legal domestic rhino horn markets. brentstirton is a staff photographer for gettyreportage and he has produced several reports on rhino poaching and conservation during this decade. In this series, we see efforts to preserve white and black rhino populations across southern Africa; these efforts increasingly include the practice of dehorning to deter poachers.
