At first glance, this cafe looks like any other in Portland, with white walls, tall coffee grinders, a La Marzocco espresso machine, house plants, neon signs and a celebratory balloon arch. But look closer, and some of those details show abovegrndpdx in a different light. The balloons on the arch rise from white to beige to brown. Shelves hold retro Air Jordans and an East African cookbook. The mostly female clientele lounging on teal couches and wicker chairs wear shawls and head scarves. And the espresso machine doesn’t just turn out oat milk cortados and vibrant green matcha drinks, but banana milk lattes as well, a staple flavor in Somali cuisine.
