On Saturday, the new Speaker of the House was elected after multiple rounds of voting, but why was this such a big deal?
The Speaker is needed for anything to get done in the House, including swearing in all the new legislators from the 2022 midterms, which is why people were worried it was taking too long and the 118th Congress wasn't off to a good start. It took 15 times for now Speaker Kevin McCarthy to be elected, the voting not surpassing 9 ballots since Civil War times.
McCarthy won with 216 votes, 2 less than he originally needed, but only after he made some concessions to the Republicans who were hesitant to vote for him.
Because of this process and the new concessions, what do you think will happen now? How do you think this will impact the future of our legislation? Comment below ๐
